(23 votes)
4 japanese eggplant, halved lengthwise
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup dry sherry
2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
3 cloves garlic finely minced
salt and freshly ground pepper
2 tablespoons sesame seeds, toasted lightly
Place eggplant in a large shallow baking dish. Mix together the soy sauce, sherry, sesame oil, and garlic in a small bowl. Pour the marinade over the eggplant and let marinate at room temperature for 1 hour. Preheat grill. Season the eggplant with salt and pepper to taste and grill on each side for 3 minutes, basting occasionally with the remaining marinade.
Comments: This is a great recipe! I don't even like eggplant, but it had a wonderful, sweet, smokey flavor that was excellent. Maureen, Portland OR
excellent recipe! Yes, I love eggplant. (I'm originally from Louisiana, where this dish is a staple)We raise our own here in California now. Tonight we didn't even bother with a meat dish.We also grilled corn on the cob, onions and garlic...try it! Anonymous, Location not stated.
I always see Japanese Eggplant at our farmer's market. This is a great recipe that enables me to make use of just one more local produce item. It's yummy! Roy, Location not stated.
I had never eaten eggplant over all these years when my husband bought and cooked them - they did not look appetizing. But we bought some Japanese eggplant at a Farmer's Market recently and tonight I used this recipe (minus the sesame oil and seeds) and they were delicious. I allowed them to grill until brown and the taste was truly amazing. You'd never think that something with that 'look' had such a sweet, smoky, taste. I even liked the skin. So now, I'll be looking for them in the grocery stores and I plan on growing some next summer in my garden. Anonymous, Ottawa, Ontario
Delicious. I wasn't sure how they would turn out because I didn't have a full hour to marinate them, so I cut them in half length-wise and then scored the skin side so that the marinade could be absorbed and then broiled them on both sides. Really fantastic. Thanks! Lilas, San Francisco
it's a five, b/c I had eaten the sauteed and know the skin and taste have to be excellent grilled! thanks for the tips as I am trying to get my family to turn vegan Deb, Location not stated.
